The Ambassadors

“The Ambassadors” is based on a historical event of 449 AD. In the twilight of the Western Roman Empire, Ambassadors seeking an audience with Attila the Hun are betrayed by the Roman Emperor they serve, causing them to question the values of the state, and their own values. This film version (2020) tracks the Roman diplomats’ seemingly futile recovery efforts as, while still unaware of the plot, they struggle to regain authority and save their lives. Anticipating the loss of Roman hegemony, they embody shifting attitudes toward negotiation and diplomacy.
